Management of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients requires time-sensitive treatment to optimize outcomes, and metrics associated with stroke treatment are closely monitored and reviewed in healthcare organizations. While pharmacologic treatment options for AIS may be life-saving, complications such as hemorrhagic conversion and orolingual angioedema may occur. This program will provide an overview of current guidelines in the management of AIS, acute complications related to medications used to treat AIS, and treatment options to address adverse events related to stroke medications.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacist & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall medications used in the management of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and hemorrhagic stroke
  2. Recognize different treatment options for AIS and hemorrhagic stroke and their adverse effects
  3. Identify appropriate treatment options for adverse events of stroke medications

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize different preparations of fibrinolytic medications used to treat acute ischemic stroke (AIS)
  2. Recall medications in an AIS patient medication history that may cause orolingual andgioedema (OLAE)
