Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols are a set of interventions intended to reduce the recovery time needed for the body to mitigate and cope with the stress of surgery. After the development of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols in 2001, various ERAS protocols for a variety of surgical specialties have emerged with many recent updates, especially in the control of postoperative nausea/vomiting (PONV). In 2020, the International Anesthesia Research Society guidelines for the management of PONV included numerous updates involving a change in the approach to prophylaxis and treatment, as well as more recent clinical evidence of newer antiemetic agents and several combination therapies. This session will recognize indications for use of pharmacologic
management of PONV and medications implemented, and apply evidence-based practice to a patient case.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall the definition of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS).
  2. Recognize medications used in the pharmacologic management of post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and indications for use.
  3. Identify evidence-based practice guidelines for the management of PONV.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Techs  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall the definition of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS).
  2. Recognize the various pharmacologic options indicated for the management of post-operative nausea and vomiting.
  3. Identify evidence-based practice guidelines for the management of PONV.
