HealthTrust presents…“Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy” (Part 3 of 4 in the Maternal Morbidity & Mortality series)

Despite a worldwide trend toward improvement in maternal morbidity and mortality, rates in the U.S. have surged in recent years. Specifically, the unacceptable rates of preventable adverse events in childbirth are topping 50 percent. A major reason for this tragic result is poor recognition and appropriate treatment of hypertensive disorders during pregnancy. This program will review the four major hypertensive disorders of obstetrics and focus on the rapid diagnosis and treatment of hypertensive emergencies—a major cause of maternal deaths. A tailored, multi-disciplinary approach including contributions from pharmacists, nurses and lab clinicians is essential for successful outcomes in the treatment of hypertensive disorders.

Learning Objectives  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the four types of hypertension that can complicate pregnancy
  2. Explain the maternal and fetal complications that can result from hypertensive disorders of pregnancy
  3. Recall the evaluation, diagnosis and management of hypertensive emergencies in pregnancy
  4. Identify the benefits of utilizing an evidence-based care team approach to aid patients with hypertensive disorders
