HIM Service Chaos: How Certified EHRs and ICD-10 Impact Transcription and Coding Costs

Certified Electronic Health Records and ICD-10 transition have dramatically affected the cost models for both transcription and coding activities. Utilizing real-world examples, this program will review how suppliers are using these government mandated changes in proposals and contract language, and how service buyers can leverage the AHIMA standards for cost, quality and turnaround time to better calculate true in-house costs, manage an RFP process and ensure contract protection. Factors causing significant market changes and strategies for controlling process measurements will be discussed. Participants will be able to apply this information to precisely manage expectations for both in-house staff employment agreements and outsourced service contracts.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss the impact of EHRs and ICD-10 on transcription and coding costs and effective strategies facilities can employ to face this challenge
  2. Review the American Health Information Management Association measurements standards for transcription and coding costs, quality and turnaround time and how to leverage those metrics for RFPs, supplier contracts and employment agreements
  3. Classify ways outsourced transcription and coding suppliers can hide cost and how to prevent this methodology
