Please Note: Continuing education credit is only available to those attending the session live. CE credit is not available when accessing the program on demand.

Hazardous guidelines are highlighted by USP 800; however since they have only been published for a few years, it is important to emphasize the importance of those guidelines in addition to the equipment that is available to protect healthcare personnel from exposure to hazardous drugs. The purpose of this presentation is to highlight the importance of personal protective equipment for compounding hazardous drugs. In addition, the equipment needed to ensure the safety of healthcare personnel during compounding of hazardous drugs (CSTDs) will be addressed.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the appropriate setting needed for sterile vs. non-sterile hazardous compounding
  2. Recall the types of closed system drug-transfer devices (CSTD) that are available
  3. Recognize the purpose of assessment of risk and how it is performed

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Techs  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall the proper storage of hazardous drugs and the importance of decontamination and clean-up of hazardous drug spills
  2. Identify what types of personal protective equipment (PPE) are needed for the preparation of hazardous medications
  3. Recognize why a drug is hazardous and belongs to NIOSH hazardous drugs list
