Following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), the use of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) decreases ischemic events and prevents stent thrombosis, but also increases the risk of bleeding. Previous guidelines recommended 6-12 months of DAPT for patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) without high bleeding risk. Recently, multiple trials have been published analyzing the safety and efficacy of short-duration DAPT followed by antiplatelet monotherapy. In 2021 ACC/AHA/SCAI released updated revascularization guidelines recommending 1-3 months of DAPT in select patients. The purpose of this presentation is to analyze the data to determine the optimal duration of DAPT following PCI.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe current consensus recommendations for duration of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)
  2. Analyze literature and strategies for short-duration DAPT
  3. Design an appropriate duration of therapy for DAPT for a patient undergoing PCI
