Epinephrine is the recommended vasopressor in cardiac arrest guidelines. However, the timing of epinephrine administration differs in shockable and non-shockable rhythm. Premature epinephrine administration in cardiac arrest with shockable rhythm is associated with less favorable patient outcomes and prolonged defibrillation. Cardiac life support guidelines emphasize early defibrillation in combination with high quality CPR for patients in cardiac arrest with shockable rhythm.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall clinical guideline recommendations for appropriate timing of epinephrine administration during in hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA)
  2. Identify the impact of epinephrine administration in IHCA with shockable rhythm on patient outcomes
  3. Recognize the rationale for higher rates of patient survival with early defibrillation in shockable rhythm

Learning Objectives for Pharmacist Techs  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall the most appropriate initial action of finding a patient with signs and symptoms consistent with ICHA
  2. Identify common medication used during in hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA)
  3. Recognize appropriate preparations and routes of administration of epinephrine for patients with IHCA
