Urgo Medical North America* presents…”Demystifying the Science & Clinical Application of Cleansers With Antimicrobial Preservatives: Differentiating Among Hypochlorous Acid, Hypochlorite & PHMB”
Hypochlorous acid (HOCI) plays a critical role in the human response to invading microbes and as such is not alien to human tissue. For safe use and storage of cleansing products, clinicians often choose a product containing antimicrobial preservatives. Due to its nonalien nature in relation to human tissue, when cleansers containing the powerful antimicrobial preservative HOCl is exposed to wound cells, there appears to be minimal toxicity compared to toxicity reported with other antimicrobial preservatives. In particular, confusion exists in the understanding of cytotoxicity effects of hypochlorous acid versus the similar sounding hypochlorite preservative and other high pH cleansers, though evidence shows there are significant toxicity differences between these two chlorine-based preservatives. Led by an interdisciplinary panel of leading experts, this session will differentiate the cytotoxicity of various antimicrobial preservatives available in wound cleansers and examine the biological/tissue impact of choosing one preservative over the other. The panel will translate the science and clinical background to an algorithmic approach to inpatient care through clinical cases.
