HealthTrust presents…“Creature Feature: Pharmacologic Management of Bites, Stings & Other Animal Exposures”

Patients commonly present to healthcare settings after bites, stings and other animal exposures. Pharmacists are often consulted on the appropriate pharmacologic management of these patients in the emergency department and other ambulatory settings. Confusion frequently arises due to the type of animal exposure, availability of new products on the market and the potential lack of appropriate indications for therapy. This program will review the background, epidemiology, pathophysiology, prophylaxis and treatment of bites, stings and other animal exposures. Covered exposures will include select mammals, insects, reptiles, and arthropods.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Review available drugs for the treatment and prophylaxis of bites, stings, and other animal exposures.
  2. Discuss appropriate pharmacologic therapy depending on indication.
  3. Describe a treatment strategy based on patient presentation.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall brand and generic names for the discussed pharmaceutical agents.
  2. Identify various available dosage formulations for presented pharmacologic agents.
  3. Explain the preparation of medications used as treatment or prophylaxis for bites, stings, and other animal exposures.
