Emergency Department nurses provide care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment where accurate and timely documentation is essential for patient safety, communication, continuity of care, quality improvement, regulatory compliance and legal protection. This educational session reviews evidence-based documentation principles, common documentation errors and best practices for documenting high-risk emergency situations. Through discussion and real-world ED case scenarios, participants will strengthen their documentation skills to improve patient outcomes and reduce legal risk.

Learning Objectives  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify essential documentation components required for Emergency Department (ED) nursing practice to support safe, high-quality patient care.
  2. Recognize common documentation errors and legal risks associated with incomplete or inaccurate charting in the ED.
  3. Incorporate best practices for documenting escalation of care, critical events, and patient education to improve patient safety and reduce liability.
