HealthTrust presents…“Cerebral Oximetry: Current State & Applications”

While there have been advances in the area of cerebral oximetry and its appropriate use in the surgical arena, there is limited understanding of this technology, how it compares to pulse oximetry and the appropriate applications. Additionally, understanding the need for use outside of the surgical suite may benefit the care of compromised patients. Fluctuation in baseline oximetry could represent changes in regional perfusion and oxygen delivery to a particular area of tissue. Quickly identifying these changes can lead to interventions which limit the time-sensitive tissues exposure to hypoxemic (deoxygenated blood) conditions. The presenter will describe how cerebral oximetry differs from pulse oximetry and the application of its use, along with emerging technologies, which will likely make their way into the clinical arena. Greater understanding of this technology and appropriate use could lead to earlier identification of hypoxemia, more rapid treatment and, ultimately, a reduction in complications due to hypoxemia.

Learning Objectives for respiratory therapists and nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall the science and technology behind the use of cerebral oximetry
  2. Describe the clinical applications of cerebral oximetry
  3. Recognize the modalities, industry options and estimated costs for clinical use of cerebral oximetry
