“Beyond the Line: Oral Agents in the Treatment of Gram-Positive Blood Stream Infections”

February 25 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

HealthTrust presents…“Beyond the Line: Oral Agents in the Treatment of Gram-Positive Blood Stream Infections”

Currently, gram-positive bacteremia is primarily managed with intravenous antibiotics for 14 days after the first negative blood culture. For some patients, there are many barriers to using IV antibiotics for this duration. Emerging research is exploring the use of oral antibiotics, but not as much for gram-positive bacteremia. The use of oral agents can provide the same level of care while avoiding common barriers to IV antibiotics such as availability, transportation, cost and side effects. This presentation will provide a brief overview of gram-positive bacteremia, review the current standard of care with intravenous antibiotics, and summarize key findings from recent literature evaluating oral agents. This information will help highlight the appropriate use of oral antibiotics for gram-positive bacteremia.

Learning Objectives | At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify patient-specific factors for determining an appropriate candidate for oral antibiotics in the treatment of gram-positive bacteremia
  2. Recognize commonly used oral antibiotic options during the treatment of gram-positive infections along with strengths and/or limitations of their use
  3. Recall evidence-based treatment guidelines utilizing oral antibiotics for the patient with gram-positive bacteremia
