HealthTrust presents…”Beyond Benzodiazepines: Alternative Management of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome in the ICU Population”

The current mainstay of treatment for acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome is benzodiazepines. In critically ill patients, benzodiazepines pose specific challenges such as tolerance which leads to increased dosing requirements and potential for adverse events. Additionally, benzodiazepines have been shown in critical care clinical studies to negatively impact patient outcomes. During this session, the presenter will begin with an overview of alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) including pathophysiology and a disease progression timeline. Current recommendations and typical management of alcohol withdrawal syndrome as well as the limitations that exist with the current state of practice will also be discussed. A review of the current literature with an emphasis on the critically ill patient population and the potential role of nonbenzodiazepine pharmacologic therapy in AWS will also be provided.

Learning Objectives for Nurses & Pharmacists  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to

  1. Identify limitations of benzodiazepine therapy for the management of alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS).
  2. Describe outcomes found in literature to support the use of alternative agents for AWS.
  3. Classify therapeutic options for AWS by level of available evidence.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to

  1. List the common signs and symptoms of alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
  2. Identify agents that have been studied as alternatives to benzodiazepines.
