On both a national and global level, the World Health Organization, The Joint Commission and the United States government have identified antimicrobial stewardship to be an issue of utmost importance. As healthcare providers, we are responsible for doing our part to reduce the spread of antimicrobial resistance to preserve the efficacy of current antimicrobial agents for as long as possible. One way this can be achieved is to limit the duration of antibiotics for both treatment and prophylaxis to an appropriate course based on available guidelines and literature. Most infections are treated over a short course of therapy from several days up to two weeks. This program will focus on two exceptions to that rule – endocarditis and osteomyelitis. Both conditions may require a longer duration of treatment. The presenter will also discuss prophylactic antibiotic regimens for surgical procedures and new guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommend limited courses of prophylactic antibiotics.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the new antimicrobial stewardship standard for hospitals from The Joint Commission
  2. Identify the appropriate duration of antibiotic treatment for osteomyelitis and endocarditis
  3. Discuss new recommendations for duration of antibiotic prophylaxis for certain elective surgeries
