HealthTrust presents…“Advancements in the Management of Sickle Cell Disease”

Sickle cell disease is characterized as an orphan disease in the United States. Until recently, hydroxyurea was the only therapy approved by the Food and Drug Administration utilized to ameliorate disease severity. There have been several recent medical advancements in the management of sickle cell disease. The purpose of this continuing education lecture is to discuss current guidelines and the role of new drug therapies in disease management. The presenter will review disease state pathophysiology, current standards of care, and recently approved medications. Medication review will include dosing, pharmacokinetics, and special considerations for all new therapies discussed.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the pathophysiology of sickle cell disease.
  2. List current therapies for sickle cell disease based on guidelines and standards of care.
  3. Identify new therapies for sickle cell disease and discuss their role in management.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. List common signs and symptoms of vaso‐occlusive crisis.
  2. Describe special handling requirements for agents utilized in the management of sickle cell disease.
  3. Outline storage requirements for agents used in the management of sickle cell disease.

Note about CE credit: If you plan to obtain credit for a live session, stay until the end of the presentation to receive the verification code you will need to obtain the continuing education credit. CE credit is individual. No group credit is available.
