Sickle cell disease is characterized as an orphan disease in the United States. Until recently, hydroxyurea was the only therapy approved by the Food and Drug Administration utilized to ameliorate disease severity. There have been several recent medical advancements in the management of sickle cell disease. The purpose of this continuing education lecture is to discuss current guidelines and the role of new drug therapies in disease management. The presenter will review disease state pathophysiology, current standards of care, and recently approved medications. Medication review will include dosing, pharmacokinetics, and special considerations for all new therapies discussed.

- List current therapies for sickle cell disease based on guidelines and standards of care.
- Identify new therapies for sickle cell disease and discuss their role in management.
