HealthTrust presents…”2018 Updates in Acute Ischemic Stroke Management”

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of mortality in the United States, and the leading cause of disability. Timely therapy, including pharmacotherapy for eligible patients, is essential to reducing morbidity and mortality in stroke patients. Pharmacists in the acute care setting can play an integral role in assessing patients for eligibility and facilitating timely stroke pharmacotherapy. In 2018, The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association updated their 2013 guideline recommendations for the early management of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). This session will discuss the role of the pharmacist in applying the updated recommendations for fibrinolytic, antihypertensive and antiplatelet therapy for Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS) to optimize patient care and clinical outcomes. Additionally, this session will give an overview on the latest recommendations for nonpharmacologic therapy for AIS.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1.  Identify the pharmacist’s role in the management of patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS).
  2. Discuss the updated recommendations for the use of systemic fibrinolytic therapy for AIS.
  3. Review the updated recommendations for adjunctive and/or alternative pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies for AIS.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall the difference between hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes.
  2. Identify brand and generic drugs names for medications used to treat strokes.
