HealthTrust Presents…”Critical Care Pearls for the General Hospital Pharmacist: A Focus on Prophylactic Medications”
Standardizing workflow by implementing checklists helps healthcare practitioners make sense of complex patients, as well as ensures that the simplest of steps is not overlooked. The ICU is notorious for containing patients with the highest degree of complexity in the hospital. In order to prevent errors, systematic checklists such as the “FAST HUG” were created, so that even a pharmacist without critical care experience may attend to the general care of these critically ill patients. Two components of the “FAST HUG” acronym are “Thromboembolic Prophylaxis” and “Stress Ulcer Prophylaxis.” This session will strive to assist pharmacists in determining which types of patients qualify (and do not qualify) for these types of prophylaxis and what medications, routes and doses should be used.
Learning Objectives for Pharmacist member attendees:
At the end of this session, participants should be able to:
- Recall the FAST HUG mnemonic for treating patients in an intensive care unit (ICU).
- Identify and recommend therapies for patients who require venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in an ICU.
- Recommend therapies for patients who require stress ulcer prophylaxis in an ICU.
Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Technician member attendees:
At the end of this session, participants should be able to:
- Recall the FAST HUG mnemonic for treating patients in an intensive care unit (ICU).
- Identify the different products used for venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in an ICU.
- Define the two different classes of medications used for stress ulcer prophylaxis in an ICU.
