Staffing Considerations During a Pandemic

The ongoing COIVD-19 pandemic has placed a premium on hospital labor resources. Staff with required competencies must be identified, located, assigned, tracked and paid. In addition, staff must be kept informed, protected and healthy; their morale must be supported; and if sick or injured, they must be provided care. This frequently involves staff in both nearby and distant locations, including staff who work from home. All healthcare organizations do emergency planning and have various levels of disaster plans; a solid foundation for planning pandemic staffing can be established theoretically, though some of the detailed work described herein cannot be done without greater characterization of the specific threats a given pathogen poses.
