Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters were designed as a therapeutic option for treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolus (PE), specifically for patients who cannot tolerate anticoagulation and/or are at an increased bleeding risk. Originally a permanent implant, the design of IVC filters has evolved to allow for percutaneous retrieval within vendor product specific timelines and conditions.
