Post-Acute Care Considerations

Considerable attention has been focused on acute care capacity shortages as the COVID-19 pandemic intensifies. Patients who have recovered from the acute phase of their illness are discharged to home or another type of post-acute care (PAC) setting, such as skilled nursing facilities, inpatient or free-standing rehabilitation facilities, long-term care hospitals, home with home health, and hospice. While data regarding PAC needs during the COVID-19 pandemic is still emerging, a review of historical PAC needs for conditions similar to COVID-19 predict 30% of hospitalized patients may need facility-based care and another 20% may need home-based care. These projections suggest a major surge in PAC needs for patients recovering from COVID-19 will follow the hospital surge. Learn more by accessing this document.
