HealthTrust presents…“What’s New in HIV? Highlights and New Data on HIV Treatment”

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treatment has dramatically evolved over the past three decades. The dedicated research on HIV/AIDS has led to great discoveries and advances in the management of HIV. The availability of the new antiretroviral agents has allowed clinicians to design an appropriate patient-specific treatment plan. Pharmacists can make a huge difference in the management of HIV/AIDS. However, many pharmacists feel uncomfortable with their knowledge in the area of HIV. Staying up to date about the latest recommendations and newly available drugs is often challenging for many pharmacy professionals. Current knowledge gaps include understanding the role of the new antiretroviral agents and their place in therapy when managing patients with HIV/AIDS. The presenter will review these new antiretroviral agents in detail by discussing their place in therapy, side effects, monitoring, counseling pearls and literature behind their use.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify new antiretroviral agents and their role in the management of HIV/AIDS.
  2. Describe a two‐drug regimen for treatment‐naive individuals and factors to consider when selecting an initial regimen for an individual.
  3. Outline key counseling points to a patient receiving new antiretroviral agents related to drug administration, potential side effects and drug‐drug interactions.
