HealthTrust presents…“ERASing Postoperative Pain : An Update on Recently Approved Non-Opioid Analgesics”

In 2016, the American Pain Society released guidelines for the management of postoperative pain that support the use of multimodal regimens. There have been several newly approved non-opioid analgesics; however, tackling high drug costs proves difficult in defining their place in therapy. Overdose deaths accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic with the primary driver being synthetic opioids. Concerns arise that Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) can begin through opioids prescribed legally, such as for postoperative analgesia. Using a multimodal approach to postoperative analgesia can not only reduce total opioid consumption but also may provide more effective pain control. This presentation will describe Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols, compare pharmacological non-opioid agents, and assess approved alternatives to opioids in treating post-operative pain and their place in therapy:  Zynrelef (bupivacaine and meloxicam), Exparel (bupivacaine liposome injection), Anjeso (IV meloxicam) and Xaracoll (collagen matrix impregnated with bupivacaine).

Learning Objectives  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Define Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)
  2. Recognize the current pharmacological non-opioid agents in a multimodal approach to treating postoperative pain
  3. Identify the place in therapy for recently approved non-opioid analgesics
