During this session, the presenter will discuss the relevant alterations in oral physiology, phases of biofilm formation, means of pathogen colonization and the mechanisms of their aspiration. He will also describe recognized oral care recommendations to be implemented for pneumonia preventative measures.

Learning Objectives for Nurses & Respiratory Therapists  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss prevalence and consequences of hospital-associated infection (HAI) and ventilator-associated event (VAE)
  2. Describe how the mouths of critically ill patients undergo radical changes to become reservoirs of pathogens
  3. Identify the means by which poor oral care in the ICU can result in complications including pneumonia
  4. List recommended oral care interventions and associated evidence-based rationales
