HealthTrust presents…“Overview of Pharmacology of Rapid Sequence Intubation & Post-Sedation Analgesia in the Emergency Department”

Rapid sequence intubation is a process of providing the rapid administration of general anesthetics with a neuromuscular blocking agent to facilitate endotracheal intubation. The purpose is to make emergent intubations easier and safer, increasing the success rates of intubation and decreasing complications. The role of health care providers (pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and nurses) may assist in these processes as well as assist with medication management post-rapid sequent intubation. The goal of this session is to bring awareness to awake-paralysis, address medication safety concerns and prevention strategies, and bring an overview of the pharmacology of these high-risk medications.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Review medications commonly used for rapid sequence intubation.
  2.  Outline the components of post‐intubation management.
  3. Describe agents used in post‐intubation management for analgesia and sedation.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Review medications commonly used for rapid sequence intubation.
  2. Identify the importance of timely access to medications used for post‐intubation management.
  3. Describe storage and strategies for safe utilization of medications used for post‐intubation management.
