SUMMARY:On-demand CE program: "Sepsis: Skilled Nursing and Long Term Care"
DESCRIPTION:Sepsis Alliance Network* presents…“Sepsis: Skilled Nursing and Long Term Care” \nSepsis impacts over 1.7 million Americans each year\, resulting in over 270\,000 deaths (a death every 2 minutes). According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study\, as many as 87% of sepsis cases begin outside of the hospital\, so early identification and treatment in the post-acute setting is key to reducing morbidity and mortality in this population. Healthcare personnel in skilled nursing facilities play a significant role in early identification and treatment of sepsis. This training module overviews sepsis\, its pathophysiology\, signs and symptoms\, and treatment within the context of skilled nursing and long term care (LTC). It outlines an early identification and treatment process for sepsis and shows learners how to incorporate it into usual work processes\, including communication strategies for providers that focus on action. Strategies for patient and family education are also reviewed. \nLearning Objectives  |  At the end of the program\, attendees should be able to: \n\nDefine sepsis\nDiscuss the key pathophysiological features of sepsis\nUtilize a sepsis screening tool to identify a patient who has sepsis or severe sepsis in a skilled nursing facility\nReview the interventions to treat sepsis in a skilled nursing facility/LTC\nEducate patients and families on sepsis identification and treatment\n\nSpeaker: \n \nPat Posa\, RN\, BSN\, MSA\, CCRN-K\, FAAN  |  Quality & Patient Safety Program Manager  |  UH/CVC\, Michigan Medicine \nTarget audience: Skilled Nursing nurses\, certified nursing assistants\, physical therapists\, occupational therapists\, nursing home administrators\, nursing home physicians \nContinuing Education Credit: \n\n1.00 Participation\n1.40 RN CE Contact Hours\nProvider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing\, Provider Number CEP17068.\nOther healthcare providers will receive a certificate of attendance for 1.0 contact hours\n\nQuestions should be directed to The Sepsis Alliance Insitute. \n* NOTE: This is an industry resource-sponsored webinar. SUMMARY:"Pulse Oximetry: A Necessary Tool in the Covid-19 Pandemic"
DESCRIPTION:Saxe Communications and Philips* present…“Pulse Oximetry: A Necessary Tool in the Covid-19 Pandemic” \nPatients with Covid-19 require close\, continuous monitoring of oxygenation. With desaturation\, a certain percentage of patients will require supplemental oxygen\, and others can advance quickly to high flow oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation. The arterial blood gas test is the gold standard for measuring oxygenation\, however it is an invasive procedure\, and not a continuous monitoring option. Pulse oximetry can provide continuous measurement of blood oxygen levels. In this webinar\, evidence will be presented to ensure the SPO2 data is reliable\, and if questionable\, we will discuss which other probe placement sites can provide more sustainable results\, and when this modality may need to be discontinued. \nLearning Objectives  |  Upon completion of this educational activity\, the participant will be able to: \n\nDescribe the mechanism of pulse oximetry\nDiscuss the key indicators to know when pulse oximetry is no longer providing reliable data\nDescribe the advantages and disadvantages of various sensor placement such\, finger\, nose\, ear and forehead\n\nPresenter: \nGregg Stiver\, BSc.\, RRT\, CPRT  | Clinical Educator\, UPMC\, Pittsburgh  |  Adjunct Instructor\, NIOSH Spirometry \nTarget Audience: Nurses & Respiratory Therapists \nContinuing Education for Nurses and Respiratory Therapists Continuing Respiratory Care Education (CRCE) credit by the American Association of Respiratory Care. SUMMARY:"A Call to Action: Experience in Adopting the ENFit System to Guard Against Accidental Tubing Misconnections"
DESCRIPTION:The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP)* and Avanos* presents…”A Call to Action: Experience in Adopting the ENFit System to Guard Against Accidental Tubing Misconnection” \nCatheter misconnections involving enteral-to-IV tubing are well documented in the patient safety literature.  They often lead to severe consequences for patients and families. Despite the recent adoption of connector design standards for enteral devices (ENFit™)\, a Joint Commission Sentinel event advisory in 2014\, and a consortium of manufacturers to support compliance and rapid development of ENFit devices in hospitals and health systems\, the U.S. response has been underwhelming. Initial adoption delays associated with previously unidentified problems in clinical practice led to the re-engineering of a new low-dose tip ENFit syringe. However\, even with these improvements\, due to the complexity of the change that is required\, a large number of organizations have yet to be fully compliant with this transition—leaving patients in a vulnerable position. \nJoin ISMP faculty as they review the many challenges associated with wrong route errors\, discuss the product design concerns that led to the re-engineering of the new ISO standard and the low-dose tip syringe. Most importantly\, we will highlight the patient safety benefits to an ENFit transition. \nLearning Objectives  |  At the end of this session\, participants should be able to: \n\nDescribe the safety challenges associated with wrong route enteral-IV medication errors.\nReflect on the hierarchy of strategies used to support safe enteral administration of medications.\nIdentify continued opportunities for national improvement towards the prevention of wrong route errors.\nShare in first-hand implementation experiences from a healthcare organization’s adoption of ENFit-compliant devices.\n\nPresenters: \n \nMichael R. Improper nutrition in the NICU can result in impaired neurodevelopment\, delayed cognitive development\, retarded growth\, and an increased risk for type 1 diabetes and cardiovascular disease later in life. It is essential that the intake of protein\, macronutrients\, and micronutrients be provided at the right nutritional levels during their first hours\, days\, and weeks of life while in the NICU\, followed by an individual feeding strategy at discharge. Presenters will provide detailed information to underscore the significance of proper nutritional intake in the NICU. They review the latest nutrient intake recommendations\, and define optimal growth as an infant transitions from parenteral to enteral nutrition during the course of acute\, convalescent\, and discharge phases\, with specific feeding strategies during each. Individualized formula fortification strategies are also discussed to help parents and providers follow prescribed feeding plans to optimize long-term outcomes. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLink nutrient intake recommendations for growing preterm infants with expected growth\nDescribe the latest evidence supporting preterm infant convalescent and discharge nutrition\nReview novel approaches to convalescent and discharge feeds when a preterm infant is designated as at risk for growth failure or micronutrient deficiencies\nCustomize nutritional interventions to help close the growth failure gap in the NICU and at discharge\n\nPresenters: Tara K.
