SUMMARY:"Updated Environmental & Social Criteria for EPEAT-registered Computers & Displays"
DESCRIPTION:The Green Electronics Council* presents…“Updated Environmental & Social Criteria for EPEAT-registered Computers & Displays” \nThe EPEAT Computer and Display category is getting an update later this year\, and EPEAT is recommending some changes in purchasing requirements. The updated category\, which launches in November\, will differ from the existing category in three major ways: \n\nIncreased focus on priority impacts – including climate change\, chemicals\, and resource consumption\nExpanded sustainability attributes with the inclusion of social impact criteria\nGreater focus on supply chain transparency and impacts\n\nIt is very likely that the majority of the products registered to the new criteria may only achieve an EPEAT Bronze rating. This is because the new criteria are much more rigorous\, and it is likely that a Bronze-registered product under the new criteria will exceed the sustainability features of a Gold-registered product under the old criteria. By focusing on impact\, sustainability and supply chain transparency\, there is no need to specify an EPEAT tier. Model contract language is available that takes into account these changes. \nThe webinar will offer a deep dive into the updated criteria and recommended changes to policies and contracts. \nQuestions should be directed to Andrea Desimone with the Green Electronics Council. \n* NOTE: This is an industry resource-sponsored webinar. You’ll also learn how Project Lazarus\, our featured community organization\, is reducing overdose mortality rates through a public health model based on the twin premises that overdose deaths are preventable and that all communities are responsible for their own health. \nMotor vehicle crashes\, homicide\, domestic and school violence\, child abuse and neglect\, suicide\, and unintentional drug overdoses are important public health concerns in the United States. In addition to their immediate health impact\, the effects of injuries and violence extend well beyond the injured person or victim of violence\, affecting family members\, friends\, coworkers\, employers\, and communities. \nAbout Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicators. The Leading Health Indicators (LHIs) represent a smaller set of Healthy People 2020 objectives selected to communicate high-priority health issues and actions to help address them. LHIs are used to assess the health of the Nation\, facilitate collaboration across sectors\, and motivate action to improve the health of the U.S. population. \nNote: There does not appear to be continuing education credit associated with this event.

SUMMARY:"Empowering Supply Chain to Drive Healthier Food Initiatives and the Use of Safer Chemicals in Our Hospitals"
DESCRIPTION:HealthTrust presents this fourth in a series of six webinars on the topic of sustainability… \n“Empowering Supply Chain to Drive Healthier Food Initiatives and the Use of Safer Chemicals in Our Hospitals” \nDownload a PDF copy of this presentation here.          Listen to a recording of this program.   \nAs healthcare continues to evolve toward a prevention model\, hospitals must expand their view of operations from taking care of patients to addressing some of the root causes of disease. Today\, a number of leading health systems are using their purchasing power to drive change in their communities from a social\, environmental and financial lens. Learn how partnering with its supply chain empowers hospitals to lead on key issues of public health such as healthier foods  and safer chemicals\, the focus of this webinar. As large purchasers of meat\, it’s important for hospitals to realize the impact of antibiotic resistance in humans. According to the PEW Research Center\, an astonishing 80 percent of antibiotics used in this country go toward meat production\, with only 20 percent used on people. Just as concerning are the chemicals used in the healthcare setting – many being linked to the very diseases that are trying to be prevented. The presenter will share an example of how a group of leading hospitals was successful in getting manufacturers to eliminate harmful added flame retardants. With a commitment to population health and prevention\, explore how hospitals can use their purchasing power to persuade suppliers to change their practices in these key health areas of concern. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nExplain the health hazards posed by the use of harmful chemicals in the supply chain to patients\, healthcare staff\, and the surrounding community.\nDescribe the necessary structure and key to rolling out initiatives to achieve sustained improvements in the areas of safer chemicals and healthier foods.\nTranslate the success of other leading hospitals in healthier foods and safer chemicals initiatives into goals or action items for their own facility or health system.\n\nPresenter: \nKyle Tafuri\, Senior Sustainability Advisor at The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center\, Hackensack-Meridian Health. Member HealthTrust’s ESN (Environmental Sustainability Network) \n \nTarget audience: Supply Chain\, Food or anyone interested in healthcare sustainability. \nContinuing Education Credit: \n\nSupply Chain: This program has been approved for CPEs by the Association for Healthcare Resource and Materials Management (AHRMM) for 1.0 contact hours for the live event only.\n\nUpcoming Sustainability Webinars: \n\nMay 25: Transportation\, electric vehicle charging stations; LEED buildings\, community connections\nJune 7: Easy sustainability wins with EVS

SUMMARY:"A Nonprofit Approach to Developing a Corporate-Level Facility Energy Management Program"
DESCRIPTION:Download a PDF of this presentation.     Listen to a recording of this presentation.  \nHealthTrust presents this second in a series of six webinars on the topic of sustainability. \n“A Nonprofit Approach to Developing a Corporate-Level Facility Energy Management Program” \nHospitals across the country have more than 2.5 times the energy intensity and carbon dioxide emissions of commercial office buildings annually\, producing more than 30 pounds of CO2 emissions per square foot\, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. A true understanding of how each facility operates and consumes energy is key to curtailing energy use across a health system. In this session\, facility leaders from a large non-profit present a case study for supply chain professionals to consider recommending a systemwide energy management program to assist their facility or health system in meeting its energy reduction goals. Using a chronological approach\, presenters will identify critical components of a successful energy program\, provide starting points to best assess energy use\, help attendees navigate early challenges that might be expected when launching such an initiative\, and recommend metrics and reporting to effectively measure the program’s impact. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nUtilize a set of basic tools to evaluate and conduct a meaningful assessment of an organization’s capabilities and potential barriers to implementing an energy management program.\nCreate the business case for obtaining leadership buy-in for this and related sustainability initiatives such as converting to LED lighting; and program awareness and employee engagement in efforts to turn off lights and equipment when not in use\, etc.\nEvaluate\, then recommend (insourced or out-sourced) resources that support appropriate planning\, execution and ongoing management of a successful program.\nIdentify effective metrics to track and report on savings and reduction results.\n\nPresenters: \nGeorge A. “Skip” Smith\, SASHE\, CHFM\, National Vice President Physical Asset Services – Catholic Health Initiatives. Member HealthTrust’s ESN (Environmental Sustainability Network) \n \nAndy Woommavovah\, National Director\, Facilities and Construction – Catholic Health Initiatives \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \nTarget audience: Supply Chain\, Facilities Operations \nContinuing Education Credit: \n\nSupply Chain: This program has been approved for CPEs by the Association for Healthcare Resource and Materials Management (AHRMM) for 1.0 contact hours for the live event only.\n\nUpcoming Sustainability Webinars: \n\nMarch 23: Waste streams management (including pharmacy waste)\nApril 27: Safer chemicals and healthier food\nMay 25: Transportation\, electric vehicle charging stations; LEED buildings\, community connections\nJune 7: Easy sustainability wins with EVS\n\n
