SUMMARY:On-Demand Program: "Ischemic Stroke: Insertable Cardiac Monitors for Atrial Fibrillation Detection and Secondary Stroke Prevention"
DESCRIPTION:Pfiedler Education and Medtronic* present…“Ischemic Stroke: Insertable Cardiac Monitors for Atrial Fibrillation Detection and Secondary Stroke Prevention” \nAn ischemic stroke may occur in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) either as the initial presenting manifestation of AF or despite appropriate antithrombotic prophylaxis. AF is associated with more severe ischemic strokes\, presumably due to embolization of larger thrombi with AF. As a result\, patients with AF who suffer an ischemic stroke appear to have a worse outcome (e.g.\, more disability\, greater mortality) than those who have an ischemic stroke in the absence of AF\, even after adjustment for the advanced age of patients with AF-related stroke. This educational program will discuss ischemic stroke and its sub-types. Secondary stroke and the associated risk factors\nwill be examined\, including the need for AF detection in specific ischemic stroke subtypes. Supporting clinical evidence and guidelines will be presented to demonstrate the importance of implementing long-term monitoring strategies reinforced by multidisciplinary collaboration. \nLearning Objectives  |  After completing this continuing education activity\, the participant should be able to: \n\nDefine ischemic stroke and ischemic stroke sub-types.\nIdentify the risk factors for secondary stroke in ischemic stroke patients.\nExamine the need for atrial fibrillation detection for secondary stroke prevention in ischemic stroke patients\, specifically\, cryptogenic\, large vessel\, and small vessel stroke patients.\nReview the latest clinical evidence and guidelines on the importance of long-term monitoring for atrial fibrillation in ischemic stroke patients.\nIllustrate the need for collaboration between neurology and stroke coordinators with electrophysiology/cardiology to assure patients receive appropriate long-term cardiac monitoring.\n\nTarget Audience:\nThis continuing education activity is intended for a perioperative nurse\, surgical technologist\, radiologic technologist\, or other healthcare professionals who want to learn more or needs to gain knowledge and skills in ischemic stroke\, stroke prevention and insertable cardiac monitors for atrial fibrillation detection. \nContinuing Education: \nFor U.S. Healthcare Professionals\, this course offers contact hours. Participants who provide healthcare in MA or VT\, or HCPs who meet the expanded covered recipient provider types under the federal Open Payments program\, will not receive a contact hours certificate. Please see the Open Payments resources page for more information. \nCalifornia Board of Registered Nursing\nAssociation of periOperative Registered Nurses is provider-approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing\, Provider Number CEP 13019 for 2.0 contact hours. Obtaining full credit for this offering depends upon attendance\, regardless of circumstances\, from beginning to end. Licensees must provide their license numbers for record-keeping purposes. The certificate of course completion issued at the conclusion of this course must be retained in the participant’s records for at least four (4) years as proof of attendance. \nNCCT\nThe National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) has approved this program for 2.0 contact hours.\nAmerican Society of Radiologic Technologists\nThis activity is approved for 1.75 Category A CE credits by the ASRT. \nEXPIRATION DATE\nThis continuing education activity was planned and provided in accordance with accreditation criteria. This material was produced in November 2021 and expires in November 2023. \nCOMMERCIAL SUPPORT\nHealthcare organizations engaged in continuing medical\, nursing\, and allied health education have adopted standards to promote balanced and evidence-based content. This course is supported by funding provided by a commercial entity and complies with the intent of these standards.
