SUMMARY:"Staph Meeting: A Case-Based Approach to Navigating Methicillin-Susceptible Staphylococcus Aureus (MSSA) Treatment"
DESCRIPTION:HealthTrust presents…“Staph Meeting: A Case-Based Approach to Navigating MSSA Treatment” \nMethicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) continues to be a leading cause of bacteremia and endocarditis within the United States and despite standard treatment approaches\, 90-day mortality is still markedly elevated. Current guidance promotes antistaphylococcal penicillins such as nafcillin and oxacillin as gold-standard for serious MSSA infections\, but emerging evidence now suggests cefazolin may offer comparable efficacy with a more favorable safety profile. The goal of this session is to evaluate the evidence comparing cefazolin to alternative MSSA treatments\, including antistaphylococcal penicillins\, other cephalosporins\, and vancomycin. Patient-specific considerations which guide us to use one agent over another will also be discussed. \nLearning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  | At the end of this session\, participants should be able to: \n\nRecall the efficacy and safety of cefazolin versus anti-staphylococcal penicillins\, other cephalosporins and vancomycin.\nRecognize the clinical relevance of the inoculum effect when selecting betalactam therapy for Methicillin-Susceptible Staphylococcus Aureus (MSSA).\nIdentify evidenced-based guidelines for de-escalation from vancomycin or broadspectrum cephalosporins such as\, cefepime and ceftriaxone\, to cefazolin in\nconfirmed MSSA infections.\n\nLearning Objectives for Pharmacy Techs  |  At the end of this session\, participants should be able to: \n\nIdentify pros and cons with cefazolin when treating Methicillin-Susceptible Staphylococcus Aureus (MSSA) infections.\nRecall dosing frequencies between cefazolin and ceftriaxone.\nRecognize common preparation details with cefazolin.\n\nPresenters: \n \nGeorge Saied\, PharmD\, MBA  |  PGY1 Pharmacy Resident  |  TriStar Centennial Medical Center \n \nBreanna Wright\, PharmD\, MS  |  PGY1 Pharmacy Resident  |  TriStar Centennial Medical Center \nTarget Audience:  Pharmacists\, Pharmacy Techs & Nurses \nCE Credit: Approved for Pharmacists\, Pharmacy Techs & Nurses \nThis program is approved for CPEs by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). SUMMARY:"Pharmacists at the Pump: Anticoagulation & Bleeding Management in Mechanical Circulatory Support"
DESCRIPTION:HealthTrust presents…“Pharmacists at the Pump: Anticoagulation & Bleeding Management in Mechanical Circulatory Support” \nAnticoagulation is necessary in mechanical circulatory support (MCS) to prevent device thrombosis caused by artificial surface contact and the prothrombotic effects of the device. Despite MCS advancements\, bleeding remains a common\, yet severe complication\, that increases hospital morbidity and mortality. Management in the intensive care unit requires a balance between device thrombosis with bleeding. MCS encompasses technologies such as Impella devices\, intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP)\, left ventricular assist devices (LVADs)\, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Due to the risk of clotting with MCS\, anticoagulation is used to mitigate thrombosis; however\, this poses the risk of bleeding as well. Bleeding remains a common complication across these devices. This presentation aims to summarize the management of bleeding complications\, specifically focusing on anticoagulant use\, reversal agents and other therapies for prevention of bleeding within this patient population. \nLearning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses | At the end of this session\, participants should be able to: \n\nRecall the incidence\, pathophysiology and device-specific risk factors contributing to bleeding in patients with Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS).\nIdentify anticoagulant strategies used in patients receiving MCS to include thrombosis prevention\, bleeding risks\, and monitoring strategies.\nRecognize current and emerging evidence on reversal agents and novel pharmacologic therapies to treat and prevent bleeding in patients on MCS.\n\nLearning Objectives for Pharmacy Techs | At the end of this session\, participants should be able to: \n\nRecognize patients needing additional education from the pharmacist while receiving anticoagulant medications in the treatment of Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS).\nIdentify anticoagulant medication schedules in the treatment of MCS.\nRecall anticoagulation medications and potential side effects for patients with MCS.\n\nPresenter: \n \nCourtney Cianci\, PharmD  | PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Resident  |  Tristar Centennial Medical Center \nTarget Audience:  Pharmacists\, Pharmacy Techs & Nurses \nCE Credit: Approved for Pharmacists\, Pharmacy Techs & Nurses \nThis program is approved for CPEs by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). SUMMARY:"The Inflation Reduction Act: What Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Means for Pharmacy"
DESCRIPTION:HealthTrust presents…“The Inflation Reduction Act: What Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Means for Pharmacy” \nThe Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) introduced the first-ever authority for CMS to negotiate drug prices\, creating significant changes to Medicare reimbursement and pharmacy operations. However\, many pharmacists and pharmacy technicians have limited familiarity with negotiation eligibility criteria\, timelines and downstream impacts on reimbursement\, 340B considerations and manufacturer pricing strategies. As IRA implementation is ongoing\, variability and uncertainty remain across practice settings. In this session\, the presenter will provide an overview of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and its implications\nfor drug pricing\, Medicare reimbursement and pharmacy operations.
