SUMMARY:"Implementing Next-generation Sequencing for Precision Oncology Testing"
DESCRIPTION:Fisher Scientific* presents….”Implementing Next-generation Sequencing for Precision Oncology Testing” \nAccording to a recent study by the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development\, the majority of cancer treatments in development have an associated genomic biomarker—a trend that’s expected to increase in the coming years. With this evolution in the clinical oncology landscape\, academic medical centers and hospital systems alike have adopted diagnostic precision medicine tools like next generation sequencing (NGS)\, which enables labs to rapidly and simultaneously test multiple genomic biomarkers from just a few nanograms of precious tumor tissue.  As the number of clinically significant biomarkers continues to expand\, this testing will continue to play a critical role in cancer diagnosis and treatment. \nIn this P.A.C.E.-accredited webinar\, Brian Piening\, Phd\, will highlight the clinical and economic considerations for implementing an NGS-based personalized medicine program and discuss case studies that demonstrate the benefits of determining the genomic profiles of a variety of cancer types. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nEvaluate the process of deciding whether to implement NGS in a clinical pathology lab\nDescribe the available testing strategies and chemistries\nReview case studies in which NGS is uniquely suited to provide novel clinical insights\n\nPresenter: \n \nBrian Piening\, Ph.D. | Associate Director | Providence St. Joseph Health (PSJH) Molecular Genomics Laboratory | Assistant Member and Head of the Tumor Immunogenomics Laboratory | Earle A. Chiles Research Institute & Providence Cancer Center \nThis webinar is produced by Whitehat Communications\, a provder of continuing education programs i clinical laboratory sciences that has been approved by the ASCLS P.A.C.E. Program. SUMMARY:"Clostridium Difficile Infection Guideline Update: Understanding the Data Behind the Recommendations"
DESCRIPTION:Download a copy of this presentation. \nAccess the recording. \nHealthTrust & Abbott (formerly Alere) present… \nProgram Summary \nClostridium difficile infection (CDI) causes intestinal inflammation that can lead to\nserious and life-threatening illnesses. In a healthcare environment such as a\nhospital or nursing home\, C-diff can easily spread through contaminated surfaces\nor person-to-person contact. CDIs pose a serious threat and require rapid clinical\ndecisions. In the United States\, C-diff is linked to more than 30\,000 deaths a year.\nDuring the past several years\, the focus of C-diff testing has moved from organism\nidentification to a renewed interest in detecting the toxins that cause the disease.\nThe incidence of patients who are simply colonized with C-diff is up to 10 times the\nnumber of patients with active CDI. Treating carriers is often ineffective and may\neven increase the risk of the patient developing CDI. This program will cover\nupdated 2017 CDI treatment guidelines and recommendations from the Infectious\nDiseases Society of America (IDSA) and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of\nAmerica (SHEA)\, describe how those updates apply to patient populations\, and\ndemonstrate how the microbiology laboratory can assist in preventing CDIs. \nLearning Objectives  | At the end of this session\, participants should be able to: \n\nInterpret the updated IDSA/SHEA CDI guidelines and treatment recommendations\nApply the updated 2017 IDSA/SHEA CDI guidelines and recommendations for C-diff diagnostics to your patient population\nIdentify the role of microbiology laboratory in preventing CDI\n\nPresenter: \n \nErik Richard Dubberke\, M.D.\, MSPH\, FSHEA\, FIDSA  | Associate Professor of Medicine\, Infectious Diseases Division\, Department of Medicine  | Washington University School of Medicine \nTarget Audience: Nurses and Infection Control and Laboratory Professionals \nContinuing Education information: This program has been approved by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) for 1.00 Synergy CERPs Category A\, File Number 22330.\nWhitehat Communications is an approved provider of continuing education programs in the clinical laboratory\nsciences by the ASCLS P.A.C.E. Program. \nThis program is supported by Whitehat Communications and co-sponsored by Abbott (formerly Alere)

SUMMARY:"The Diagnosis & Monitoring of Sepsis: Lactate & Beyond"
DESCRIPTION:Radiometer and acutecaretesting.org* present…“The Diagnosis & Monitoring of Sepsis: Lactate & Beyond” \nSepsis threatens the lives of over 27 million people each year worldwide. Inappropriate or delayed treatment allows for disease progression to severe sepsis\, septic shock and ultimately to 8 million deaths per year. Recent efforts to reduce mortality have focused on generating definitions of sepsis and related conditions and establishing guidelines for early identification and implementation of goal-directed (individualized) therapy.
