Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a leading cause of death during pregnancy\, accounting for approximately 10 percent of all maternal mortality. Timely diagnosis and treatment can prevent many of these tragedies. Similarly\, venous thromboembolism prophylaxis during pregnancy and the peripartum period can prevent a significant amount of these potentially catastrophic events. Specifically\, the unacceptable rates of preventable adverse events in childbirth are topping 50 percent. A major reason for this tragic result is poor recognition and appropriate treatment of hypertensive disorders during pregnancy. This program will review the four major hypertensive disorders of obstetrics and focus on the rapid diagnosis and treatment of hypertensive emergencies—a major cause of maternal deaths. In a healthcare environment such as a\nhospital or nursing home\, C-diff can easily spread through contaminated surfaces\nor person-to-person contact. CDIs pose a serious threat and require rapid clinical\ndecisions. In the United States\, C-diff is linked to more than 30\,000 deaths a year.\nDuring the past several years\, the focus of C-diff testing has moved from organism\nidentification to a renewed interest in detecting the toxins that cause the disease.\nThe incidence of patients who are simply colonized with C-diff is up to 10 times the\nnumber of patients with active CDI. Treating carriers is often ineffective and may\neven increase the risk of the patient developing CDI.
