DESCRIPTION:HealthTrust presents…“From Pseudomonas to Stenotrophomonas: Navigating the Treatment of Non-Fermenting Gram-Negative Bacteria” \n \nDownload the content. \nPlease Note: Continuing education credit is only available to those attending the session live. CE credit is not available when accessing the program on demand. \nAntimicrobial-resistant (AMR) infections are a global crisis\, accounting for 2.8 million infections and over 35\,000 deaths annually from 2012 to 2017\, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Antibiotic Resistance Threats in the United States Report. The treatment of non-fermenting gram-negative bacteria (NFGNB) remains challenging due to rapidly evolving resistance patterns\, limited comparative data\, and new guideline recommendations. This presentation highlights current preferred and alternative therapies\, identifies evidence gaps and critically evaluates emerging literature. \nLearning Objectives | At the end of this session\, participants should be able to: \n\nRecall non-fermenting gram-negative bacteria and their resistance mechanisms.\nIdentify alternative therapies for Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa)\, Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB)\, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (S. maltophilia) according to current evidence-based guidelines.\nRecognize patient-centered guideline recommendations regarding nebulized antibiotics in the treatment of ventilator-associated pneumonias.\n\nPresenter: \n \nAbigail Reeves\, PharmD  |  PGY1 Pharmacy Resident  |  McLeod Regional Medical Center  |  Florence\, SC \nTarget Audience:  Pharmacists\, Nurses & Lab professionals \nCE Credit: Approved for Pharmacists\, Nurses & Lab professionals \nThis program is approved for CPEs by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). SUMMARY:"Does the Nose Know? The Value of MRSA Nares Swab in Skin & Soft Tissue Infections"
DESCRIPTION:HealthTrust presents...”Does the Nose Know? The Value of MRSA Nares Swab in Skin & Soft Tissue Infections” \n \n  \nDownload the content. \nPlease Note: Continuing education credit is only available to those attending the session live. CE credit is not available when accessing the program on demand. \nStaphylococcus aureus is known to be colonized in the nares\, throat\, axillae\, rectum\, and groin. Colonization with Staphylococcus aureus often precedes clinical infection. The methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) nasal polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a well-established test to identify patients who are colonized with MRSA. This test is noninvasive\, highly sensitive\, and has a fast turnaround time. The value of the MRSA nasal PCR for pulmonary infections is well-established through various studies\, but its utility for non-pulmonary infections is still under investigation. The MRSA nasal PCR is currently utilized to guide antibiotic treatment in pneumonia\, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America states that a negative MRSA nasal PCR can be used to discontinue anti-MRSA coverage. There is growing evidence that the MRSA nasal PCR can be used outside of current indications. The presenter will review literature and assess the strengths and limitations for using the MRSA nasal PCR for skin and soft tissue infections. \nLearning Objectives for Pharmacists\, Nurses & Lab professionals  |  At the end of this session\, participants should be able to: \n\nRecall the current indications indications for the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) nasal polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test.\nIdentify studies that have utilized the MRSA nasal PCR in skin and soft tissue infections\nRecognize the clinical utility for the MRSA nasal PCR in skin and soft tissue infections\n\nPresenter: \n \nGabby Hill\, PharmD  |  PGY-1 Pharmacy Resident  |  McLeod Health \nTarget Audience: Pharmacists\, Nurses & Lab professionals \nCE Credit: Approved for Pharmacists & Nurses; pending for Lab professionals \nThis program is approved for CPEs by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). SUMMARY:"A Change in Culture: A Review of the 2023 Infection Diseases Society of America (IDSA) Guidelines for the Treatment of Antimicrobial Resistant Gram-Negative Infections"
DESCRIPTION:HealthTrust presents…“A Change in Culture: A Review of the 2023 Infection Diseases Society of America (IDSA) Guidelines for the Treatment of Antimicrobial Resistant Gram-Negative Infections” \n \n  \nDownload the content. \nThe rate of antibiotic resistance\, particularly in Gram-negative organisms like Enterobacterales and P. aeruginosa\, has emerged as a global crisis. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) reports that antimicrobial resistant organisms accounted for 2.8 million infections\, causing 35\,000 deaths between 2012 and 2017. Research with the newer antimicrobial agents is rapidly emerging\, so it is vital that practitioners understand their appropriate place in therapy in order to use them effectively in the treatment of resistant Gram-negative organisms. The presenter will provide an overview of the updated IDSA guidelines regarding antimicrobial resistance among Gram-negative organisms\, including a discussion of the relevance\, incidence and epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). A review the IDSA treatment recommendations and treatment rationale for the following: extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E)\, carbapenemresistant Enterobacterales (CRE)\, Pseudomonas aeruginosa with difficult-to-treat resistance (DTR-PS) and carbapenemresistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) will also be discussed. \nLearning Objectives for Pharmacists\, Nurses & Lab Professionals  |  At the end of this session\, participants should be able to: \n\nRecall the importance of antimicrobial resistance among Gram-negative organisms.\nIdentify mechanisms of resistance\, recommendations for treatment\, and their rationale for highly resistant Gram-negative organisms.\nRecognize an appropriate antimicrobial regimen based on resistance patterns of a Gram-negative organism.\n\nPresenter: \n \nCameron Crawford\, PharmD  |  PGY-1 Pharmacy Resident  |  Princeton Baptist Medical Center  |   Birmingham\, AL \nTarget Audience: Pharmacists\, Nurses & Lab professionals \nCE Credit: Approved for Pharmacists\, Nurses & Lab professionals \nThis program is approved for CPEs by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).
