SUMMARY:"Treating Ulcerative Colitis in the Acute Care Setting"
DESCRIPTION:HealthTrust presents…“Treating Ulcerative Colitis in the Acute Care Setting” \n \n  \nDownload the content. \nPharmacotherapy for the acute management of refractory ulcerative colitis flares is limited. High doses of steroids and immunosuppressants are the mainstay of therapy. In many refractory cases\, surgical resection and ostomy formation are the only options.Current ulcerative colitis guidelines published in 2020 focus mainly on the outpatient management. The recommended medications used for inpatient management of acute ulcerative colitis flares have not changed; however\, recent studies have investigated new dosing strategies and acute phase application of maintenance therapies. This session will review the current guidelines and challenges for acute management of refractory ulcerative colitis\, including a discussion of the literature behind applying novel therapy plans and dosing strategies. The advantages of these novel strategies\, such as ease of transition to outpatient regimens will be discussed in addition to their challenges\, such as cost. \nLearning Objectives for Pharmacists & Nurses  |  At the end of this session\, participants should be able to: \n\nRecall the current guidelines for acute management of ulcerative colitis and transition to maintenance therapies.\nRecognize treatment plans based on stage of ulcerative colitis and patient-specific factors to optimize safe and effective acute management of ulcerative colitis.\nIdentify advantages and challenges of newer pharmacotherapy options for acute management of ulcerative colitis including small molecules\, monoclonal antibodies\, and novel pipeline agents.\n\nLearning Objectives for Pharmacy Techs  |  At the end of this session\, participants should be able to: \n\nRecall medications used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis that are classified as NIOSH hazardous drugs.\nIdentify medications that can worsen ulcerative colitis.\nRecognize the appropriate dose for weight-based medication regimens for acute management of ulcerative colitis.\n\nPresenter: \n \nClare Newell\, PharmD.
