SUMMARY:"Identification & Treatment of Sepsis in the Pediatric Population"
DESCRIPTION:HealthTrust presents…“Identification & Treatment of Sepsis in the Pediatric Population“ \nDownload a copy of this presentation \nAccess the recording. \nIdentifying true cases of sepsis in children can be challenging\, considering septic shock in adults usually presents as warm shock versus cold shock as is typically the case in pediatric patients. As a result\, recognition of pediatric sepsis can be delayed\, causing further complications. This session will review the definition of sepsis as well as SIRS\, severe sepsis and septic shock. The presenter will provide detailed information on pathophysiology\, causes and treatment guidelines\, and the use of trigger tools in treating pediatric sepsis. Because the use of steroids in pediatric sepsis is as controversial as refractory therapy\, the presenter will discuss the importance of pharmacists being aware of a treatment algorithm when first and second line therapies fail. \nLearning Objectives for PharmD member attendees: \nAt the end of this session\, participants should be able to: \n\nDefine the different types of sepsis\nDescribe the pathophysiology of sepsis\nDiscuss etiology and current treatment guidelines for pediatric sepsis\nAssess limitations of current guidelines\nEvaluate the benefits of early goal-directed therapy\nAssess the use of steroids in pediatric sepsis\n\nLearning Objectives for Pharmacy Technician member attendees: \nAt the end of this session\, participants should be able to: \n\nList the commonly used vasoactive agents in pediatric sepsis\nDiscuss preparation instructions for such agents\nState monitoring parameters for various agents\nIdentify potential adverse effects for each agent\n\n Presenter: \n \nPriya Narang\, PharmD\, MS  |  PGY-1 pharmacy practice resident at Atlantic Health System \nTarget Audience:  PharmD and Pharmacy Technicians \nContinuing Education Information: 1.0 contact hours for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians. Belmont University College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
