Venous Thromboembolism Update: 2016

Download a PDF of this presentation.

This presentation will define and discuss the scope of Venous Thromboembolism (VTE), including the incidence and mortality figures in the U.S. The concept of individual risk assessment vs. group prophylaxis will be discussed, and the Caprini Thrombosis Risk Scoring method will be reviewed. Results from various studies around the world using this score will be presented, including the most successful application of this score in the U.S., at Boston University. The concept of process vs. outcomes measures will be defined in the context of VTE. The incidence of post-discharge prophylaxis will be presented, as well as the importance of providing prophylaxis for patients during their entire period of risk. The program will conclude with a list of “to-do” objectives involving new oral anticoagulants.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the concept of individual risk assessment
  2. Review studies validating the Caprini Score, especially in surgical patients
  3. Discuss the incidence of VTE following hospital discharge
  4. Identify measures necessary before widespread adoption of new oral anticoagulants
