HealthTrust presents…”Thromboelastography (TEG) & Its Role in Determining a Patient’s Coagulation Status”

With the approval of many more direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), thromboelastography (TEG) is a test commonly utilized in order to test the efficiency of blood clotting in these patients. TEG offers many benefits, including information regarding fibrin formation, clot strength and fibrinolysis. A TEG analysis provides a bigger picture of a patient’s coagulation status compared to INR or PTT levels. Performing a TEG analysis on patients who are taking anticoagulants may help decrease unnecessary exposure to blood products as well as unnecessary delays to procedures, especially in the emergent setting.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe how TEG can be used to determine the coagulation status of a patient
  2. Identify the key measurements of a TEG and apply it to a TEG analysis
  3. Interpret a TEG analysis in order to determine the therapeutic interventions appropriate for the patient’s coagulation status.
