HealthTrust presents…”Management of Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor-related Toxicities”

Pembrolizumab, nivolumab and other immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICPis) are currently FDA-approved for many different cancers and their indications for use continue to expand at a rapid rate. Despite the positive clinical benefits of these medications, however, there are many adverse effects associated with ICPis that are different than those of cytotoxic chemotherapy. The mechanism of action of ICPi agents can lead to toxicities in many body systems. Due to the need for guidance in managing these adverse effects, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network partnered to develop guidelines on the management of ICPi-related adverse effects. This session will discuss the guidelines—released in February of 2018—to help practitioners make more evidence-based recommendations to prescribers of these medications. Tools for increasing patient and clinician communication during treatment with ICPis will also be presented.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacist member attendees:

At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the mechanism of action of ICPis.
  2. Discuss the management of the most common ICPi-related toxicities.
  3. Demonstrate the importance of patient and clinician communication prior to and during treatment
    with ICPis.
