The availability of biosimilar products has grown in outpatient and inpatient pharmacy settings since the Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act (BCPI) Act of 2009 was passed. As prescription drug prices continue to be a controversial issue, there will likely be an increase in biosimilar product availability in the coming years. Pharmacists in all settings need to be familiar with the approval process for biosimilars in order to better educate patients and providers on these medications. This program will review FDA requirements for the approval of biosimilars, highlight key differences between generic medications and biosimilars, and provide an overview of newly approved biosimilar products.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists:

At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe process for approval of biosimilar products.
  2. Recall the differences between generic and biosimilar products.
  3. Identify newly approved biosimilar products.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians:

At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Determine the regulatory requirements for a biosimilar product to be approved.
  2. Identify three biosimilars currently on the U.S. market.
