New guidelines by ASA, APSF, CMS and The Joint Commission relating to ventilation (respiration) monitoring for patients who are not intubated has been driving adaptations to healthcare practices. In this session, a comparison between pathophysiological responses relating to respiratory depression and the methodology and technology used to assess respiratory status will be discussed. Attendees will gain a better understanding of the application of these guidelines for various care areas including, but not limited to: PACU, Med Surg Floors, ICU and Procedural Sedation areas.  The speakers will provide an introduction to new solutions for respiratory status monitoring that will assist clinicians in the planning and implementation of updated solutions.

Learning Objectives for Nurses and Respiratory Therapists  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall contemporary guidelines driving new practices in respiratory monitoring
  2. Discuss pathophysiologic responses that contribute to respiratory decompensation
  3. Identify methods and technologies for respiratory assessment
  4. Visualize respiratory volume monitoring (RVM) as a new clinical tool for respiratory assessment
  5. Outline an implementation plan of respiratory solutions
