HealthTrust & Avanos present…”Issues in Enteral Feeding: Malnutrition”

The prevalence of malnutrition in developed countries has been estimated to be 1-15 percent of non-institutionalized older adults, 25-60 percent of older adults in geriatric care facilities, and 35-65 percent of older adults in hospitals. Several studies have also reported a prevalence of illness-related malnutrition of 6-51 percent in hospitalized children. Furthermore, one in three patients in the United States enters the hospital malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. By identifying patients with, or at risk for malnutrition, nurses and dietitians in the hospital setting can initiate nutrition interventions and optimize clinical outcomes. This program provides an explanation of the causes, risk factors and potential complications of malnutrition in the hospital setting. Indicators of malnutrition are described, and the use of enteral and parenteral feeding is discussed. The importance of establishing a multidisciplinary care model to improve nutrition intervention is reviewed.

Learning Objectives for member attendees  |  At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Explain why malnutrition is a significant clinical problem in acute healthcare settings.
