Improved Surgical Outcomes Through Advanced Access and Visualization

This continuing education activity provides an overview of advanced photonics technology that improves intracavity illumination and visualization to overcome the challenges in minimally invasive/minimal access open surgical techniques. The limitations and problems associated with traditional OR lighting, including selected preventable errors and surgical “never events,” will be reviewed. Advanced photonics lighting technology and non-conductive instrumentation used for intracavity illumination and visualization, including its advantages, safety aspects and common applications, will be described. Oportunity will be provided for questions and discussion of the issues.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss the advantages of improved access, illumination and visualization of the surgical cavity during minimally invasive and minimal access open surgery
  2. Identify the limitations of traditional operating room lighting
  3. Describe the safety advantages and most common applications of advanced photonics technology
  4. Discuss the advantages of non-conductive instrumentation in the operating room environment
  5. Identify potential safety hazards with electrosurgical equipment in the operating room
